A representative from Advocates for Youth argues both for and against the use of a vaccine to prevent human papilloma virus (HPV), in their article “Will the Politics of Teen Sex Stop a Cancer Vaccine?”. While I agree with one side in this article, I do not agree with the other. I believe that the HPV vaccine should be given to those who want it. If it can save a life, I am all for it. I do not think that certain groups should oppose it because they think it will inhibit sexual activity in teens. I am personally a Christian and I believe in waiting until marriage, however, I also believe that if teens are going to have sex with the vaccine, the odds of them doing it without the vaccine are the same. I have had a good friend who had cancer just this past year. While it was not cervical cancer, it was still scary for her and everyone involved. She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a kind of cancer that is treatable after they diagnose it. She is one hundred percent good now, because they treated it right away. Anyway to prevent cancer should be taken. It is the teen’s responsibility and choice in more than one aspect. If they want to get the vaccine, let them. If they want to have sex bad enough, they will. Period.
